Some people on the estate continue to be the source of
spreading rumours as a way to intimidate residents and gain
status or popularity. But spreading rumours as a way to turn
people against someone is a form of bullying. Spreading
unkind gossip is not a decent or mature way to act.
There are some significant differences between the two
Gossip refers to talking about someone or something
with another person or a group of persons.
refers to spreading specific information about someone or
something that has not been verified. In other words, it may
be a truth or a falsehood.
Most people indulge in some sort of gossip especially with
their friends and families. It could be just expressing
disapproval, sharing one’s discontent or airing one’s views
about a certain action or a certain person. Indulging
in such gossip is not generally considered very harmful as long as you
do not influence the other people too much with your
On the other hand, a rumour is spread by a person with a
specific purpose in mind, most often which is maligning the
character of the person involved.
People who indulge in gossip may just be doing it to while
away their time or do some idle chit-chat with their
friends. On the other hand - especially here on the estate,
a person who intends to spread a rumour will seek out
specific people and talk with them in order to put the
rumour in the other people’s ears with the intention of it
spreading like wildfire - which it usually does.
Something to bear in mind - if they gossip to you it's
pretty much guaranteed they will also gossip about you!
If you didn't hear it with your own
ears or see it with your own eyes,
don't invent it with your small mind or
share it with your big mouth!
