GOSSIP AND RUMOUR

Respect People's Privacy

Why would anyone be so interested in finding out about other people, that they would go to the lengths of asking around about them and even checking into their background without their knowledge or permission?  Well some people do that and not for any legitimate reasons, perhaps it's just nosieness on their part, their need to know the in's and out's of people's lives, or even to find out about people and their families and gossip about them, whatever the reason it's definitely an unhealthy obsessive thing to do and is an invasion of their privacy.  Anyone guilty of such a practice would be well advised to find another hobby to occupy their time because this sort of behaviour is unacceptable and is to be frowned upon!

Some people on the estate continue to be the source of spreading rumours as a way to intimidate residents and gain status or popularity. But spreading rumours as a way to turn people against someone is a form of bullying. Spreading unkind gossip is not a decent or mature way to act.   There are some significant differences between the two terms:

Gossip refers to talking about someone or something with another person or a group of persons.

Rumour refers to spreading specific information about someone or something that has not been verified. In other words, it may be a truth or a falsehood.

Most people indulge in some sort of gossip especially with their friends and families. It could be just expressing disapproval, sharing one’s discontent or airing one’s views about a certain action or a certain person.  Indulging in such gossip is not generally considered very harmful as long as you do not influence the other people too much with your negative thoughts.

On the other hand, a rumour is spread by a person with a specific purpose in mind, most often which is maligning the character of the person involved.

People who indulge in gossip may just be doing it to while away their time or do some idle chit-chat with their friends. On the other hand - especially here on the estate, a person who intends to spread a rumour will seek out specific people and talk with them in order to put the rumour in the other people’s ears with the intention of it spreading like wildfire - which it usually does.

Something to bear in mind - if they gossip to you it's pretty much guaranteed they will also gossip about you!

If you didn't hear it with your own ears or see it with your own eyes, don't invent it with your small mind or share it with your big mouth!
